As an exploration of form and a deep dive into design history, this project began by researching the revival typeface, Libre Caslon. With my learnings, I developed a visual system of colors and composition and used that to design an informatonal booklet spread and animation. I wanted to highlight the unique features of the typeface and teach people of its historical significance and development as it was revived over time.

Book Spread
For the book spread, I wanted to bring out the traditional techniques that this typeface stemmed from while acknowledging the modern touches of the revival. The deep yellow ochre, reminiscent of a book page aging over time, represent tradition while the brighter teal and turquoise are more refreshing colors that indicate a revival. The typesetting, close together, allows for continuity in reading and a balanced composition. Read about my process here!
Animation
I utilized the same colors and branding system for the animation as the book spread. I wanted the movement to be steady with the beat to bring out a traditional aspect, while still having moments of surprise and delight. I utilized a contrast of traditional elements such as a typewriter typing out words as well as a browser screen to depict the development of the typeface as a revival.
As one of my first experiences with typesetting as well as animation, I learned a lot from this project about telling stories through different forms of media! You can read more about my thoughts and process on my Medium!
